A moose in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park

Adapted and abridged from the Cabot Trail Companion.

Picking up the tour after Chéticamp, you're about to enter the Cape Breton Highlands National Park: the northernmost third of the Cabot Trail. You'll soon be passing some of the most spectacular scenery the island has to offer ... so be sure to make full use of the lookoffs. There's a daily fee of a few dollars to use the park — but before you pay and drive on through, check out the visitor centre, where Julia Thomas is a heritage presentation specialist.

On Track 6, Julia tells us about the history of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park of Canada, which is made up of a dense maze of deep river canyons cutting through low, flat mountains. Where they meet the sea north of Chéticamp, these mountains form dramatic cliffs, and the most famous views of the entire Cabot Trail...

You'll soon be arriving at some awe-inspiring lookoffs, and you'll probably want to plan in some of the park's two-dozen or so nature trails, which have varying lengths and degrees of difficulty...

Julia introduces us to a handful of the most popular hikes, including the Skyline Trail, a five-mile loop that begins just after the Cabot Trail turns to head inland. A few kilometres along from the Skyline Trail is the popular 20-minute Bog Trail, a boardwalk that takes you into a swamp that has some surprising carnivorous plants.

You can see a fascinating variety of species in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, but there's no doubt about it: one creature stands head and shoulders above the rest for sheer thrill value — the moose. Julia gives us lots of interesting information about Cape Breton moose — including how moose poop changes according to the seasons!
